Flexible learning - What and Why

Technological developments are increasingly available and help us perform better. But in many cases they require skills and training in order to be utilized the most efficient way. It is well known by leaders of top-performing companies and organizations that training their people increases performance. But it is also known that employees struggle to find the motivation – or time – to fit training into their packed schedules.

Traditional face-to-face learning methods cost much and take long to roll out. A better solution is to combine aspects of learning, work- and family life with a great deal of flexibility, by adapting technology and distributed learning methods.

A recent article in the San Diego Union Tribune noted that while people value compensation, they value access to training and opportunity for advancement even more. One way companies can increase accessibility to training is to implement a competency management system that employees can use anytime, anywhere, and tying incentives to course completion

The two most common methods of distributed learning are referred to as synchronous and asynchronous online learning. They differ in the way that synchronous online classes require student and instructors to be online at the same time, while asynchronous learning allow greater flexibility for learners to study at their own schedule.

Flexibility in comparison to face-to-face learning methods lies first and foremost in the factors time, space and cost. Use of digital solutions to disseminate information to a target audience is a growing trend - and at reasonable cost - to stimulate learning anytime and anywhere for anyone who has interest and a computer (PC , tablet or smartphone ) with internet connection.

Digital tools and distributed learning methods is the core of Flexible Learning, a modern way of disseminating information and knowledge targeted at a specific or general learning audiences

  • The Flexibel Learning Portal

Our Flexible Learning Portal support both asynchronous and synchronous online learning methods, as well as ordinary classroom, flipped classroom or blended learning methods. In fact, our portal is so rich with features that is must be tailored to the individual customer needs. It consist of many components that are integrated into one system and can support a wide range of training and learning needs.

The main components are Moodle, a Learning Management System (LMS) and Joomla, a Content Management System (CMS), both serving millions of people around the world today, in academia as well as corporate lines.
A large number of configurable options and plugins/extensions are available to both of these components.

Another important component is Joomdle which enable Single Sign On and data exchange between the two management systems, so that they act as one system. Joomdle also integrates several other components, like a powerful social networking component, forums, mailing lists, subscriptions and eCommerce, if such capabilities are needed.

The Flexible Learning Portal give facilitators the tools to view learners’ participation, track their progress,
and get feedback about the course. All the different components in the Flexible Learning Portal are regularly updated and easy to maintain.

A challenge that arises with online learning is that learners lack direct access to instructors, peer assistance or classmates. This has been taken into account in the Flexible Learning Portal. With the launch of a new course the manager can select if an online forum and a social media group for that particular course should be created. When learners later enrol they will become members and encouraged to engage in group collaboration. Learners can then tap into the knowledge and experience of their peers, or communicate with the online facilitator, while still studying the core content at their own pace. To illustrate, consider posting a question or comment on the forum to spark online discussion in the group and ask learners to post their opinion or answer. A Video conference tool is also available, that allows learners and instructors to join conference calls.

Businesses need the ability to innovate and change to offer customers and prospects new products and services. Whether you are onboarding new hires, offering product knowledge sessions, or compliance training, - knowledge is a key element to success.
